French: Les planetes

Image
Year 5 have started a new topic, learning all about planets. They practised the new vocabulary and identified the link between days of the week in  French  and some planet names. They also started looking at different sentence structures when describing planets.

Self image and identity

Today, the children looked at how an identity can be copied, modified or altered. They then looked at the positives and negatives of these and why people might change their identity.

RE Festival Workshop- World Humanism Day

Image
In our RE workshop today we learnt about the worldview of Humanism Day. Humanists are people that believe they do not need religion to help them live good and happy lives and turn to science for answers. They don't believe in any God, have a religious book or sacred place, consequently there are no set ways in which to mark special occasions or even World Humanist Day itself. There may be events like picnics, conferences, parties or even protests to mark the day but it would depend on each cultures preference.  To mark this day and as a reflection of all the festivals we have already learnt about this year, we worked in teams to design our own perfect celebration, thinking about the food, venue, activities, decorations and clothes we would want.

Decimals

During this week, the children continued to increase their knowledge about decimals. This included rounding to the nearest whole and tenth. I have been amazed at how efficient the children are at converting decimals to fractions as well as writing the numbers correctly when a number is dictated to them.  Towards the end of the week, the children have started to find add and subtract decimals using their place value knowledge.

Being Healthy

Image
This week in PSHE, the children identified why it is important to eat well, exercise and keep yourself healthy. They completed a quiz about nutrients, food and exercise. Finally they were given a challenge to make a poster about eating and living well for Aldi as they are looking for a new graphic  to put up on their billboards. I wonder if we will see any of our posters on a billboard.

Meeting new friends from Cowes

Today, the children from Cowes came to visit their new school. First they carried out a small activity involving a dot and then all of year five went out to enjoy the fabulous grounds outside.

A good life - Humanism

Image
Our RE lesson this week was all about the concept: A good life. The children identified what a good life is and discussed what makes their life great and at times not so great. They then looked at rules and how these need to be kept so there are boundaries to protect us.  They then went on to enquire about what Humanism is and how these people feel they live a meaningful and full life. Their approach is non-religious as they lead a good and happy life without needing to believe in god.  Once the children had completed multiple tasks, they then had a choice of activities to show their learning.
