Ian Dickens
Year 5 were entranced as Ian Dickens the great great grandson of Charles Dickens came in to talk to them about how Charles Dickens wrote his books and his inspiration. They were introduced to the many books he had written as well as the plays he wrote and acted out. His last performance was in Portsmouth.
Charles Dickens has many fans all over the world. When he toured America he travelled by river boat and train. In 1865 he was involved in the Staplehurst rail crash where he helped others as his carriage was only one of three that survived. His biggest fan was Queen Victoria and they first met in 1870 where he gave her a book about his home in Balmoral.
When Charles died he was buried in Poets Corner in Westminster Abbey at the request of Queen Victoria. If you are ever in London you should visit the Charles Dickens museum.
