Y5 have been practicing making cams and followers to decide what shape cam they want to use in their mechanical system. They showed great understanding about how a cam mechanism operates - it converts rotary motion (movement that goes round in a circle) into linear motion (movement in a straight line).
We learnt that these mechanisms can be found in car engines, printing machines and sewing machines. As well as in automata toys.
