Square, cubed or prime?

Image
The children have had a very practical week using lots of resources to learn the difference between a prime number a squared number and a cubed number. These are always confusing so the used stem sentences to ensure they knew that you multiply to find both a squared and cubed number and how the little notation tells them how many times to multiply these.

Colour mixing in response to poetry

This week, Year 5 have been using acrylic paints to mix their own colours in response to the poem, Ghost in the Garden. They produced some wonderfully autumnal and earthly shades which will be used next week to collage in preparation for mono-printing the week after.

Exploring primary sources from Sutton Hoo

This week, Year 5 have been (literally) piecing together evidence to find out more about the Anglo-Saxons. In teams, the children had to quickly unscramble and make sense of artefacts. They collaborated and communicated beautifully with the aim of figuring out what each object is and what it can tell us about the Anglo-Saxons. Then, each team was challenged to formally present their archaeological findings and theories to the finest 'Historians of Gurnard University'. I was so impressed with how well Year 5 worked together and explained their ideas. Super work, historians!

Monotype prints and mark making

This half term we are studying mono printing. In our first two lessons we studied what mono printing is and looked at the work of Kevork Mourad, who employs mono printing in his work to explore Middle Eastern history and politics. We looked at mark making and replicated some of strategies used by famous artists. Next week, we will be making our first simple prints and exploring the work of Max Ernst and how he used the technique of frottage in his artwork.

French: Bon appetit!

Year 5 started a new topic last week: Bon appetit! The focus for the last weeks has been lunch. We looked at a typical lunch menu from French schools and discussed the differences. The children practised the new lunchtime vocabulary by playing the shopping list game with their partners. They also conjugated the verb: manger. Then they drew and labelled what they would put in their lunchboxes. They

Factors, Multiples and Primes

This week the children have been recapping their vocabulary.  Children need to be able to use, factors, multiples and primes fluently in lessons.  They have been working methodically to find these numbers and then solving problems and investigations.
