What is the production of goods?

Using a mobile phone as a stimulus, year 5 looked at how the components of a mobile phone originate from many countries: global supply chain. They then identified that there are over 200 components that make up a mobile. There are three stages to make a phone: extracting the raw materials from the ground; manufacturing the components and making the phone. 

Following on from this, they researched the reasons why most companies manufacture their goods in countries like China and the disadvantages of this. Using pictures and comments from workers in different countries the children realised that some of the conditions people work in are not good. They then made rules for their company to ensure that their workers would be  treated fairly.
